* Up & Away Birthday Girl Trio *

Written on Saturday, January 31st, 2015

Hi-a! It’s been a while, huh? I’ve been crafting, but I haven’t been posting. This is the part I dread. It’s like reading a book and knowing you have to do a book report.

Today, I’m sharing a trio of cards I just finished for 3 of my favorite crafting buddies. 🙂 Yes, they’re little girls (well, not any more) and I use to craft with their moms. I decided to try a bunch of new stuff with this set. It’s a long post, but totally worth it! Let’s get started!

These came out exactly as I had pictured them in my head! Okay, so I’ll walk you through what I did. First, I stamped the images from Up & Away by Mama Elephant in Desert Sand Memento ink on X-Press It cardstock. This way I could do no lines copic coloring. I was teasing my followers on instagram when I finished each one. 🙂 I colored them up with Copics (colors are listed below). I will do a video on my no lines coloring soon. After coloring, used a 0.05 black copic multiliner to draw in their eyes and add eyelashes. They’re girls! They have to have eyelashes! The fox is my favorite. I didn’t think those colors would work! But, I LOVE the other 2 as well! Next, I cut them out using the matching dies to the stamp set.

My balloon letters are a set from Mama Elephant called Balloon Letters (fitting, huh?). I stamped them on 110lb. Neenah Solar White Cardstock so they wouldn’t warp. I also used Mama Elephant pigment inks. I’m not too good with any inks other than memento or veramark, so this way way out of my comfort zone. I just can’t get them to quit smudging, even with heat setting. I did find out something really cool though! You can use colored pencils and gamsol over the top of these pigment inks and it won’t smear the ink! So, I used some colored pencils and gamsol to add depth. Now, these stamps do not have matching dies. I cut them out by hand using an exacto knife and my fussy cutting scissors. Then, I layered them with glossy accents.

While that dried, I cut some patterns from the 6×6 Sugar Shoppe paper pad. I used these because they had a background that had white in it, thus making the pink pop. I recently purchased some Doodlebug cardstock. OMGoodness! Total awesomeness! I used Mama Elephant’s Femme Frames dies to cut the Bubblegum and Sea Glass cardstocks. I also matted the blue layer with a piece of metallic silver I picked up in Hobby Lobby. Totally makes it pop! Then, also used the inner die to cut 2 pieces of vellum and a piece of Neenah 80lb. cardstock. This way the stitched lines were all matchy-matchy. I layered one of the vellum pieces over the blue piece and then used the other vellum and white pieces to make my clouds using Mama Elephant’s Landscape Trio die set. Did I mention this is a total Mama Elephant card??? Except the birthday sentiment. Before adhering, I prepped my vellum piece, stamped the word birthday, and then embossed it using silver embossing powder. Then I adhered all my layers together.

Now that the balloon letters were dry, I placed them on glue dots and put them on a spare sticker backer sheet. I used my silver dmc thread to tie little knots. Multi matte medium sealed the ends for me so they didn’t unravel. After this comes the totally, probably unnecessary part. I punched a 1/8″ hole in the hands of the critters and then used my tweezers to pull the strings through. This way I knew my strings would be exactly the way I wanted them. Next, I took off the critter and placed it where I wanted it and then moved the balloon letters around. I pulled the strings tight through their hand and tied a really quick little knot, which I also secured with multi matte medium.

For the inside, I stamped “Make a Wish” from Mama Elephant’s Make A Wish set along with the heart balloon from balloons et cetera.

That’s it for my cards! I do hope you find them as cute as I do! It’s going to be hard parting with these.
